Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukender Reddy stressed the need for instilling values of mother tongue and culture in students from an early age, warning that contemporary trends were distancing children from their linguistic roots.
He was speaking at a programme organised by the Telangana Sahitya Parishat, where the book “Telangana Bhasha – Samagra Parishilana” (Telangana Language – A Comprehensive Overview), authored by Telangana Language and Culture Council founder-president Prof. Ganta Jalandhar Reddy.
The book was released by State Planning Board Vice Chairman G. Chinna Reddy. The book was dedicated to Mr. Sukhender Reddy on the occasion.
Mr. Sukhender Reddy said the preservation of language and culture was possible only within school campuses and through the efforts of teachers. When language and culture are lost, the bonds between teachers and students, parents and children become artificial, he observed. Protecting and promoting Telugu was a pressing necessity, achievable mainly through government schools.
Mr. Chinna Reddy said Telugu originated in the Telangana region, not in Andhra Pradesh, tracing its existence from the Satavahana period to the era of the last Nizam. The influence of Urdu in Telangana, particularly in Hyderabad, which he described as “Mini India”, shaped the dialect, he added.
