New theater group moves to old Theatre Baton Rouge building

The former Theatre Baton Rouge building at 7155 Florida Blvd. will soon be home to a Mid City Civic Theatre. The new community theater company put out a call for volunteers last week to help in cleaning the theater building. The company sent out a press release on Oct. 29, officially announcing its formation, saying it is "dedicated to enriching the city through the transformative power of theater." The press release called its new home "a space rich in Baton Rouge theatre history and ready to inspire a new generation of performers and audiences." The release continued, stating that Mid City Civic Theatre's mission is to enrich the Baton Rouge community through professional-quality productions and education offerings that are accessible, inclusive and inspiring. Its programs will emphasize education, mentorship and creative collaboration, beginning with a new training initiative for young and emerging artists. The program’s name and full details will be announced soon. “We’re so excited to see community theatre take root again in Mid City,” said Caty LeJeune, MCCT Co-Founder. “Our hope is for this to be a space where everyone feels welcome, a place that inspires creativity and sparks community connection.” Beyond its own productions, Mid City Civic Theatre will serve as a hub for collaboration, supporting local performing groups and arts organizations without permanent venues by providing rehearsal space, networking opportunities, and shared resources to help Baton Rouge’s creative community thrive. The company will present a mix of classic and contemporary productions, original works, educational programs, and community workshops, "creating opportunities for local talent to shine and for audiences to experience the joy and connection of live theater."
