Arthur T. Demoulas shared his first direct statement about Market Basket Thursday since he was fired as the grocery store chain’s CEO last week.
Demoulas’ spokeswoman had released a statement after Market Basket’s board unanimously voted him out, saying his camp didn’t believe that attempts at mediation were being made in good faith.
His new statement doesn’t address his own firing, but those of three other longtime Market Basket employees — NBC10 Boston has reached out to Market Basket for comment on their status with the company and Demoulas’ statement.
That statement calls the firings alarming and disheartening. Read it here:
These firings are alarming in that they continue to break down the fabric of Market Basket. Paul Quigley, Adam Deschene, and Esteban Alvarez are three exceptional men who each dedicated their professional lives to Market Basket. They are talented grocery store operators who are tremendous contributors to Market Basket’s success and to its culture. They are well respected and admired colleagues. Paul Quigley devoted 44 years to Market Basket and as a Regional District Supervisor, he played a central role in the development of all stores on the South Shore of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Adam devoted 19 years to Market Basket and Esteban 30 years, each holding a stellar track record in the Operations Department. These terminations are disheartening and a major loss for the Market Basket team.
Another longtime Market Basket employee, Donald T. Mulligan, was named as interim CEO this week.
In a new episode of our podcast on the Market Basket ownership saga, “Food Feud,” Grant Welker of the Boston Business Journal pointed out the apparent longtime ties Mulligan has with the Demoulas family, including the recently-ousted CEO.
“He walked out in protest back in 2014 when Arthur T. was last fired,” Welker said.
