New Pension Guidelines: The central government has issued new rules for calculating government employees’ pensions and family pensions. Pensions will now be determined according to the rules in effect at the time of retirement, resignation, or death. New Pension Guidelines: The Central Government has issued clear instructions regarding the calculation of pension and family pension for government employees under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021. The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) issued an office memorandum stating that an employee’s “last working day” will be the day they retire. In essence, the rules will apply from the day an employee retires, quits, or dies. This means that pension and family pension will be determined according to the rules in effect on that day, to avoid any confusion or errors. How will pension rules be determined? Under Rule 5 of the new CCS (Pension) Rules, 2021, it has now been clarified that a government employee’s pension or family pension will be determined according to the rules in effect on the day they retire, quit, are removed from service, or die. The government order said, “The pension or family pension of an employee shall be determined in accordance with the rules in force at the time of his retirement, resignation or death. How will pension be determined during leave or suspension? According to a Business Standard report, the government has clarified that if an employee is on leave, absent, or suspended before retirement, the date of retirement or death will also be considered part of their service period. This means that there will be no gap in service in such a situation, and pension calculation will continue uninterrupted, thus ensuring no impact on the pension of the employee or his or her family. What are the rules for family pension? New rules have been issued regarding family pension. According to this, after the employee’s death, parents will be required to submit a life certificate to receive the pension, so that the government’s records remain updated and additional pension is not mistakenly awarded. According to Rule 12(5) of the new CCS (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 2023, if the employee does not have a wife or children, his or her parents will receive a family pension for life, ensuring their financial security.
