October is rolling in. The air’s a little crisper, the leaves are finally falling and Peacock’s lineup is really leaning into spooky season and true crime.
The streamer kicks things off with “American Psycho,” a razor-sharp portrait of late ’90s excess that still cuts close. And if you’ve never watched it, maybe all the Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) business card memes will finally make sense. Mid-month, “Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy” aims to unravel one of the most chilling cases in American history about Gacy’s slayings with archival footage and first-person accounts.
Later, if you want a bucolic weekend gone very wrong, “The Cabin in the Woods” breaks standard slasher rules in satisfyingly clever ways. ‘American Psycho’
By day, Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is the perfect Manhattan yuppie. He’s got his Pierce & Pierce business card in his pocket, a curated routine and a smile that blinds. Too bad he’s nothing like that in real life. He’s a vicious serial killer, a narcissist, and yes, a psychopath.
We watch Bateman try to maintain a mask of normalcy during his Wall Street day job as he assaults women, men, and even unhoused people in an attempt to sate his lust for blood, at any cost. Oh, and he’s a big ’80s music fan, so if you need a break during the gore, you’ve got some Huey Lewis to listen to in between.
‘Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy’
When police investigate suburban Chicago in the 1970s, they uncover a nightmare hiding in plain sight: dozens of missing boys and young men, discovered beneath a quiet home’s crawlspace. The man at the center seemed impossible to suspect: employed, well-liked in the community, and active in local politics, even donning clown makeup to cheer up sick children.
“Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy” unpacks how that facade held for years while unraveling the grief behind those affected by serial killer Gacy’s crimes. Along the way, the series maps the missed leads, blind spots, and assumptions that helped a predator operate undetected.
‘Cabin in the Woods’
When five college friends head to a remote cabin for an easy weekend, they stumble into something decidedly crazy. It’s a hold house, complete with trapdoors, weird relics, and a cellar full of choices they were never meant to understand. Oh, and they all basically have to do with horror movie clichés.
Far away in a sterile control room, technicians monitor their every move. Why? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out as they steer the unsuspecting teens toward a predictable outcome — one that you probably won’t guess ahead of time, though. This subversive horror movie set the pace for the genre years ago, and it still feels every bit as fresh today thanks to its inventive ideas and the way it re-examines horror and tropes as concepts.
