New initiative tackles nappy waste in Limerick with free reusable kits for expectant parents

FAMILIES in Limerick preparing to welcome a new baby can now apply for a free cloth nappy starter kit, under a new sustainability initiative. The Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme spearheaded by VOICE Ireland in partnership with University Maternity Hospital Limerick and Limerick City and County Council is designed to help families transition to reusable cloth nappies. Eligible antenatal patients attending University Maternity Hospital Limerick will receive a starter pack that includes: 10 premium reusable cloth nappies, 12 washable cloth wipes, a waterproof storage bag for used nappies, eco-friendly absorbent inserts made from bamboo, cotton, and hemp and easy-to-follow instructions for use and care. This initiative comes in response to the growing environmental impact of disposable nappies. Ireland currently sends around one million disposable nappies to landfill each day. According to the EPA’s 2022 Household Waste Characterisation report, nappies make up 10% of kerbside residual waste—amounting to over 75,000 tonnes annually. Helen Kenneally, Environmental Awareness Officer at Limerick Council commented on the incentive: “Making the switch to cloth nappies is a meaningful change that can have a big environmental impact. We encourage families across the region to apply and give them a try.” Eileen Ronan, Director of Midwifery at University Maternity Hospital Limerick, added: “We are delighted to support this initiative across the Mid-West region. It is a practical way for families to reduce waste and embrace sustainability. It provides the opportunity for families to make the eco-conscious choice while at the same time saving money.” VOICE Ireland said: “We created the Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme to inspire families who may never have considered reusable nappies to give them a try. Modern cloth nappies are soft, breathable, colourful, and easy to use.” Additional support to help parents get started with Cloth Nappies, is available from the Cloth Nappy Library who are offering free online workshops and one-to-one guidance. These sessions will help families understand the different types of cloth nappies available, how to use and wash them, and provide ongoing support throughout the journey. The scheme is open to antenatal patients at University Maternity Hospital Limerick. Families in Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary can apply for a free starter pack here. As availability of free kits is limited, early applications are advised. Participants will be asked to complete a short follow-up survey to help improve future rollouts. VOICE Ireland is also calling for national reduction targets for disposable nappies, following the example of the Dutch government, which aims to cut nappy waste and CO₂ emissions by 20% by 2027. While disposable nappies have environmental impacts during production and disposal, reusable nappies’ impact is concentrated in the use phase, which can be reduced through informed washing and drying practices. Providing guidance in the starter kit ensures that families can make the most of their switch. This initiative represents a significant step toward more sustainable parenting and a circular economy. Families are encouraged to take part while kits are still available. By promoting reusable nappies and supporting sustainable choices, this project contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.
