Cicero, N.Y. — Motorists heading south on Interstate 81 in Cicero will have a new route starting Tuesday to connect to Interstate 481. That new route will begin at a fork in I-81 near the South Bay Road bridge. Motorists can keep left there to switch from southbound I-81 to southbound I-481, which will eventually be renamed I-81. They can keep right to stay on southbound I-81, which will eventually be renamed Business Loop 81. The new traffic pattern will take effect around noon Tuesday, according to the state Department of Transportation. The current way to get to I-481, the looping Exit 29S ramp, will close permanently around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the transportation department said. The construction at the I-81/I-481 interchange is part of the $2.25 billion project to tear down the elevated I-81 viaduct and re-route traffic in the area. Construction on the project will continue through 2028.
