The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) to halt the implementation of the newly announced fees for the institutions. The suspension followed concerns from the public and a planned meeting between the PRINCOF and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education on Tuesday. The new fees will remain suspended until a decision is reached on the matter. “Thus, the previously approved fees by parliament still hold until further notice,” the Commission noted in a statement on October 27 after meeting the principals. Meanwhile, it directed each college to submit a signed resolution by at least two-thirds of the student body for consideration by the Commission on college-specific fees that have been agreed with the Student Representative Councils. The new fee structure originally proposed by PRINCOF witnessed about 10% increase from last year’s fees, with new components introduced into the fee structure. The increment factored in an increment in accommodation and examination fees. Stoey by Hajara Fuseini
