New BCCI President to be selected by India’s Home Minister, 3-4 players shortlisted

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will elect office-bearers, including the president, during the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28. According to a recent report by Cricbuzz, senior BCCI officials and ruling BJP leaders are set to meet in Delhi on Saturday, September 20.
Roger Binny stepped down from his role as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in July after crossing the age cap set by the board’s constitution. Office bearers should not continue in their posts after reaching the age of 70.
Binny had been elected as the BCCI’s 36th president in October 2022. He replaced former India captain Sourav Ganguly, whose three-year term had ended. Binny was the sole nominee for the position and was elected uncontested.

“Cricbuzz can reveal that a meeting of the top BCCI bosses with ruling BJP members has been scheduled in Delhi on September 20, when the all-important decision is likely to be made,” the report read.

Speculation Mounts Over Next BCCI Chief as Former Cricketers Emerge as Contenders
There have been speculations about who will take the next BCCI chief position, with several former cricketers in the mix. Sourav Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh, Raghuram Bhatt, and Kiran More are in contention, but the final choice remains uncertain.
State associations can update their submissions before September 19. The final announcement is expected Saturday night in Delhi, and while the BJP does not usually intervene in sports administration, they have been backing leadership roles, which could be the same for the next BCCI chief.
Back in 2022, Sourav Ganguly was eligible for another term as BCCI chief, but the board ultimately chose Roger Binny for the role. Former BCCI president N. Srinivasan criticized Ganguly’s three-year tenure.
BCCI Begins Interviews for New National Selectors on September 18
The BCCI commenced interviews for appointing new national selectors on Thursday, September 18. The process is being conducted online by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which currently includes Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe.
Sulakshana Naik, previously a CAC member, is no longer part of the committee, and the BCCI may appoint a replacement. The CAC will select seven individuals in total.
Two members for the men’s national selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, one member for the national junior committee, and four for the national women’s committee will be appointed. The newly appointed selectors are set to assume their roles following the BCCI AGM.
Applicants must have played a minimum of seven Test matches, or 30 first-class matches, 10 ODIs, along 20 first-class games. Candidates should have retired from professional cricket for at least five years and must not have served on any BCCI cricket committee for more than five years.
