New £18m train station near Glasgow takes shape as drone captures unique view

New drone footage has given a first look at a new train station currently being built at Balgray, south of Barrhead. Construction of the £18.3 million station began in July, and it is now starting to take shape, with the new footage showing where the future platforms will be. Overhead line structures have also been installed, and drainage and earthworks have helped prepare the ground. Due to be completed in autumn next year, the station will consist of two platforms connected by a footbridge with lifts. It will also have waiting shelters, ticket machines and secure bike storage. Now that initial foundations have been laid, the next phases of construction involve building the footbridge and starting work on the station's car park, which is to have 80 spaces. Barrhead's new station comes as part of the wider Glasgow City Region City Deal, and funding has been provided by the UK and Scottish Governments along with East Renfrewshire Council. The project aims to make it easier for people to travel to and from Glasgow for work, education or leisure. Ashley McDonald, scheme project manager at Network Rail Scotland, said: “We know how much this station will mean to the local community and it’s great to be able to share these early glimpses of how it’s progressing. “The new station is about giving people more choice in how they get to work, visit family and friends and enjoy their free time. It makes rail a more convenient and accessible option for their everyday journeys. “As the build continues, we’re committed to keeping the community updated and involved. It’s great to see the progress so far, and we’re looking forward to delivering a station that will make a real difference to the local area.” East Renfrewshire Council leader Owen O'Donnell said: “It’s exciting to see Balgray station starting to take shape. We are very much looking forward to the new station opening in autumn 2026. “Having this new station in Barrhead is going to make a huge difference to our growing community there. Public transport options are set to be much improved between Barrhead and other parts of East Renfrewshire, as well as making it easier to travel to Glasgow city centre, and for visitors to access Dams to Darnley Country Park.” Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here to receive news and features direct to your inbox Join Glasgow Live's WhatsApp community hereand get the latest news sent straight to your messages.
