Neutrogena makeup remover wipes sold in SC recalled by FDA due to potential bacteria contamination

Popular makeup brand Neutrogena has issued a recall for makeup removing wipes sold in South Carolina that could be contaminated with a bacteria that causes sepsis, among other serious infections. An internal investigation by Kenvue Brands LLC, the N.J.-based company that owns Neutorgena, revealed its Makeup Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes tested positive for a bacteria called pluralibacter gergoviae. The bacteria can cause severe infections and has been linked to urinary tract infections, respiratory diseases, eye infections and sepsis, especially in people with weakened immune systems, according to Melbec Microbiology, a microbiology testing company that specializes in the cosmetics industry. The product at the center of the recall is for wipes with lot number 1835U6325A. More than 1,300 cases were sold in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas. The recall was issued in September and the FDA categorized the risk level as Class II, which means use of or exposure to the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” The status is the second lowest of five recall classifications. The FDA did not issue a press release for the recall. Kenvue, a global consumer health company that spun off from Johnson & Johnson in 2023, also owns brands Tylenol, Listerine and Band-Aid. Kenvue wrote in a statement to The Post and Courier that the health and safety of customers is their top priority. “Despite meeting release specifications, one lot of the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Ultra-Soft Cleansing Towelettes, 50 (count) may have been impacted by procedural deficiencies observed during manufacturing,” the statement read. The company added that they voluntarily recalled the product “out of an abundance of caution.” No other Neutrogena products are included in the recall.
