xxx Cam Thomas is back with the Nets — at least for now. The high-scoring guard signed his qualifying offer earlier this month, worth just under $6 million, after restricted free agent talks stalled out.
That usually signals a player won’t be sticking around long-term, but GM Sean Marks told reporters not to read too much into it.
“It’s maybe the ugly part of the business when you can’t find a common ground,” Marks said, via Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. “I also don’t want to jump to conclusions because a common ground couldn’t be met this summer doesn’t mean he’s not a Net in the future or throughout the season.”
Thomas echoed that sentiment while making it clear he’s happy to take control of his own path.
“I’d rather control my situation,” he told reporters. “As a player that’s the type of control you want in your situation. Just going to finish the year and we’ll see what happens. But I’m happy to be here to play in front of fans again.”
By taking the qualifying offer, Thomas sets himself up for unrestricted free agency next summer — something he admitted excites him.
“It was more pros to me taking the QO than taking any other deal,” he said, via Brian Lewis of the New York Post. “You want to keep the power that you have as a player as much as you can, as long as you can. So that was really the main deciding factor.”
Thomas, 23, averaged 22.5 points in 66 games last season.
