She Walks in Darkness has become an instant Netflix global hit. Netflix's new Spanish-language political thriller, known under its original title, Un fantasma en la batalla, was released on the streaming service on October 17. Now, shortly after its release, She Walks in Darkness ranks fourth on Netflix's Global Top 10 non-English movies for the week of October 13–19. It ranks below Caramelo, Inside Furioza, War 2, and above 27 Nights, Swim to Me, A Woman with No Filter, Furioza, Good News, and Everybody Loves Me When I'm Dead. She Walks in Darkness ranks in Netflix's Top 10 movies in 14 countries this week – Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Hungary, Malta, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Morocco, and Lebanon. Written and directed by Agustín Díaz Yanes, She Walks in Darkness follows a young Spanish civil guard agent who leaves everything behind to go undercover within the ETA, a Basque separatist group, and spends over a decade trying to locate the terrorist group's multiple weapons caches scattered throughout southern France. The film's cast includes Susana Abaitua, Andrés Gertrúdix, Iraia Elias, Raúl Arévalo, Ariadna Gil, Eduardo Rejón, Iñaki Balboa, Jaime Chávarri, Cris Iglesias, Anartz Zuazua, and Mikel Losada. Despite its popularity on Netflix, She Walks in Darkness only has 9 reviews from critics and two ratings from users on Rotten Tomatoes, which aren't enough to qualify for scores. However, six out of the nine reviews are positive, with Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com writing, "She Walks in Darkness takes a piece of recent Spanish history and turns it into a tense tale of espionage." The audience reviews also praise the film for being visually polished and historically accurate, but also criticize it as emotionally cold, with flat pacing, one-sided politics, and shallow characters which ultimately waste its strong premise and lead performance. But still, by transforming one of Spain's most turbulent chapters in recent history into a taut and slow-burning thriller, She Walks in Darkness bridges history and suspense with remarkable precision. Director Agustín Díaz Yanes blends meticulous realism with the nerve-wracking tension of espionage, creating a story that feels both intimate and explosive.
