Nepal GenZ's Choice of Interim PM is Alumna of BHU

Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has emerged as a potential candidate to lead Nepal’s transition government, after the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned following widespread protests by locals against alleged corruption within the administration. Born in 1952, Karki is a Nepalese jurist and was the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal. She is also the first and only woman to have held the post. Also Read | Nepal Protests: ICAI Postpones CA Exams Till September 15 Karki first pursued a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and successfully graduated from the Mahendra Morang Campus, Biratnagar in 1972. Following this, she shifted to India to pursue master’s degree in political science. For this, she enrolled in Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi and earned her master’s degree in 1975. Interestingly, BHU was also where she met her husband, Durga Prasad Subedi, a member and youth wing leader in the Nepali Congress. She then returned to education in Nepal, where she once again started pursuing a bachelor’s degree, but this time it was in law. She earned her bachelor’s degree in law from Tribhuvan University in Nepal in 1978. Following this, she then began her law practice in Biratnagar in 1979 and later worked as an assistant teacher at Mahendra Multiple Campus, Dharan, in 1985. In 2007, she was recognised as a Senior Advocate. Karki was appointed as an Ad-Hoc Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal on January 22, 2009 and became a permanent Justice on November 18, 2010. She went on to serve as Acting Chief Justice from April 13 to July 10 2016, before holding the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court until June 7, 2017.
