Nebraska's new paid sick leave law goes into effect Oct. 1.

Nebraska voters passed a paid sick leave law in November that guarantees paid sick leave for more employees than ever before. That law goes into effect Wednesday.
Voters approved the Nebraska Healthy Families and Workplaces Act by about a 75% to 25% margin. But lawmakers modified the law in May, excluding more than 130,000 workers from the initiative.
Here are seven things to know about the Nebraska Healthy Families and Workplaces Act.
* Small businesses with between 11 and 19 employees must provide at least 40 hours of paid sick time in a year.
* Businesses with 20 or more employees are required to provide at least 56 hours of paid sick time in a year.
* Businesses with 10 or fewer employees are exempt from the paid sick leave law.
* Both full-time and part-time employees will accrue sick leave over the year based on their work week. The new law won’t supersede more generous leave policies offered by some employers.
* Sick leave can be taken for an employee’s mental or physical illness, a health condition or doctor’s visit, a public health emergency or to care for a family member.
* Employers whose current paid leave policy already meets the requirements of the Act are not required to provide additional paid sick time. Employers may consult with a legal advisor regarding their policy.
* Independent contractors, seasonal or temporary agricultural workers and Nebraskans under the age of 16 are not eligible to accrue paid sick leave.
