Nebraska's August unemployment rate stays at 3%

Nebraska’s unemployment rate stayed steady at 3.0% while the national rate increased once again.
The Nebraska Department of Labor reported an unemployment rate of 3.0% for August, similar to a year before when it was 2.9%.
However, as Nebraska’s rate remained steady, the national rate climbed 0.1 percentage points in both July and August, leaving the national rate at 4.3%. Nebraska has the seventh lowest unemployment rate in the country.
In Lincoln, the unemployment rate was 2.8, down 0.1 percentage points from July. Lincoln’s rate does not account for seasonal workers, while Nebraska’s does.
The unemployment rate update, which was released Friday, showed increasing employment numbers in Omaha.
“The labor force in Nebraska has continued to grow, led by record high employment in the Omaha metro,” said Katie Thurber, Nebraska labor commissioner. “August was the second straight month of historically high employment in Omaha at over 525,500.”
Lincoln reported that 195,177 people were employed in August, an increase of about 650 from July, according to the department. About 1.06 million people were employed in Nebraska as of August.
But some employees in Lincoln and Nebraska could be facing job losses in the coming months.
A layoff of 219 people at Eaton Corp., a manufacturing plant in Kearney, is expected to start Sept. 10, according to a filing to the Nebraska Department of Labor.
Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals announced that it would be closing its Child Development Center at the end of October.
Neenah Foundry, which makes products like manhole covers and other municipal castings, announced it would be cutting over 100 positions and transitioning to a distribution center starting Dec. 31.
Finally, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has upcoming job cuts if approved by the university and the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. Those cuts would likely include six programs and 58 positions.
