Nebraska takes its show on the run for the first true road game of the season. No, we’re not counting Arrowhead Stadium as a road game for the Huskers, who had about 90% of the crowd (at least).
Nebraska is a 6.5-point favorite at Maryland. Here’s our best shot at how we think the game plays out.
Huskers at Terrapins
What will NU’s special teams’ signature moment be against the Terrapins?
Amie Just, columnist: It wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a punt return touchdown for Jacory Barney Jr.
Luke Mullin, reporter: Kicker Kyle Cunanan drills a 50-yard field goal through swirling winds right before halftime.
Nate Head, editor: Let’s say Archie Wilson pins the Terrapins inside their own 7-yard line at a critical moment.
How does Maryland fare against the No. 1-ranked Husker secondary?
Just: Nebraska’s secondary is a force to be reckoned with, and they lock down Maryland’s passing offense for 175 yards.
Mullin: Quarterback Malik Washington drops back time and time again, throwing for over 200 yards, but also struggles to pick up first downs consistently.
Head: It’d be surprising if Maryland didn’t eclipse 200 yards passing at home. Washington throwing for around 220 feels like a comfortable number.
Maryland hasn’t had an individual player rush for more than 62 yards in a game this season. What will Maryland’s leading rusher end the game with?
Just: I think that will remain the same. Nebraska’s defensive line has looked better and the run defense will continue to improve. My guess is that Maryland’s leading rusher tallies 54 yards.
Head: Williams will get close to that figure but end up in the high 50’s. The Terps just don’t run it well, but they think they can against Nebraska, as coach Mike Locksley indicated Tuesday.
Which team wins the turnover battle, and how many takeaways do they produce?
Just: Nebraska has been elite at creating turnovers on both defense and special teams, and Nebraska’s offense has done a great job of protecting the football. I expect that to continue and Nebraska finishes the game plus-2.
Mullin: Nebraska intercepts Maryland twice but also fumbles once, emerging with a plus-one turnover margin.
Head: Even. Both teams turn the ball over one time.
