Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has joined Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo in Warner Bros. animated musical titled Bad Fairies. As reported by Deadline, Gatwa has signed to join the original musical comedy’s voice cast alongside Erivo, who joined last month as the voice of Jayne Staplegun. Bad Fairies follows a delightfully subversive gang of fairies as they make a mess in their magical world. Gatwa’s role is still under wraps, but Erivo’s character is known to be a trailblazing fairy as she sparks a rebellion. Locksmith Animation is working alongside Warner Bros. Animation, and the film is currently in production, hoping to release on May 21, 2027, in theaters. Bad Fairies is written by Deborah Frances-White (Young Dracula) and directed by Megan Nicole Dong (Centaurworld), and co-directed by Olivier Staphylas (How to Train Your Dragon). Tony Award winners, known for their collaboration on Six: The Musical, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss will be writing the songs alongside Isabelle Summers (Florence + The Machine), with Ian Eisendrath (KPop Demon Hunters) acting as executive music producer. Not much is known about the movie in terms of plot or individual characters, but it has been promised to deliver humor as well as a promising soundtrack. Erivo is currently on a press tour promoting her upcoming release, Wicked: For Good, as one of the leads, Elphaba. It had been promised to perform well at the box office as it broke records within 24 hours of the tickets being released. The film’s official release date is November 21, with some theaters releasing a double feature including the first movie in John M. Chu’s adaptation. Gatwa starred as The Doctor in the long-running sci-fi series Doctor Who after he found worldwide fame during his stint as Eric in Netflix’s Sex Education. He has also starred in films such as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and The Roses. The actor is set to appear in The Queen of Fashion and Frank and Percy.
