NCERT, UGC Preparing Modules To Integrate Ayurveda In School And College Curriculum

The government is planning to introduce Ayurveda in school and college health education, Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav has said. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) are working together to prepare course modules so that students can learn the principles of holistic health from an early stage.
Some states, including Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, have already started adding the Indian knowledge system to their school curriculum, the minister noted.
“Discussions are underway with NCERT and UGC for preparing course modules for the school education and higher education,” Jadhav told PTI.
The minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to promote Ayurveda at a global level. He said the focus is on evidence-based research, with high-quality clinical trials being conducted through the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and other research bodies. In partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), standards are also being set to improve the scientific credibility of Ayurvedic treatments.
On the debate between modern medicine and traditional practices, Jadhav said the aim is to create a balanced system. “Allopathy and AYUSH systems are complementary to each other, not competitors. Through the National AYUSH Mission and AYUSH Grid, we are working towards combining the benefits of both systems to provide better and more comprehensive healthcare services,” he said.
Under the National AYUSH Mission, doctors are being placed in Health and Wellness Centres, especially in rural and remote areas, to strengthen primary healthcare facilities.
Jadhav also said the Ministry of AYUSH has helped give India’s traditional practices global recognition over the last decade.
“We have not only established AYUSH systems with scientific evidence, but also succeeded in spreading them to the masses and gaining global acceptance.

“From giving Yoga a global identity to the establishment of the WHO Global Center for Traditional Medicine, and through initiatives like International Yoga Day, AYUSH Chairs, and international Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), we have made historic achievements for global holistic health,” he said.
The minister added that the government is focused on equal and balanced development. The ministry is working to preserve the uniqueness of each system while promoting research, standardisation, and education. Under the National AYUSH Mission, new health centres and medicinal gardens are being developed across India.
