Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested Thursday morning as part of an FBI sports betting investigation, according to reports. Rozier, 31, was arrested Thursday morning at a hotel in Orlando, Florida, one day after the Heat lost its season opener against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. He did not play in the game due to a coach’s decision. Rozier was arrested on “two indictments involving illegal gambling schemes,” the Department of Justice said in a news release, per the Sun Sentinel. He has been under federal investigation for more than a year as part of an inquiry related to unusual betting patterns in a 2023 game while he played for the Charlotte Hornets. On March 23, 2023, a surge of bets were placed on Rozier’s prop bets, including points, rebounds and assists, hitting the under in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans. A total of 30 wagers totaling $13,759 were placed in 46 minutes from a professional bettor, according to ESPN. Rozier played 10 minutes in the game before exiting the game due to a foot injury he cited. Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, previously said his client met with the NBA numerous times in 2023 but was cleared of any wrongdoing. “It’s unfortunate that he’s a big name in sports and is having to endure all this,” Trusty told ESPN in July. “My hope and expectation is that at some point that they’ll be done with their investigation and will be professional enough to let us know that it’s 100% over and that they reached the same conclusion that was reached in 2023.” Rozier is in the final season of a four-year, $96.1 million contract he signed with the Hornets in 2021. He was traded by the Hornets to the Heat in January 2024.
