NBA Legend Tim Hardaway Thinks Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Dončić Will Win 2025-26 MVP Award

NBA legend Tim Hardaway thinks Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Dončić will win the 2025-26 MVP Award.

Dončić looked like arguably the best basketball player in the world during EuroBasket. He averaged 34.7 points for Slovenia.

“He actually should have probably won it one time, but I’m gonna go with Luka Dončić,” Tim Hardaway told the Action Network. “I think that if he has a really, really good year, if he has a good year like he normally has and they end up in the upper echelons, 1-4 seed, right around there, I think he has a really, really, really good chance of winning MVP.

“He should have won it probably about two years ago. But he didn’t win it. He’s that talented. But he still gotta do other stuff. Just because you lose weight, he’s still gonna be the same Luka. This is not overseas. This is the NBA. You’re still gonna have to keep your feet in front of people. They are still gonna go at you. Just ’cause you lost weight, they don’t believe that you could play defense now. You can move your feet now. You are as agile as you should be, and this and that. You’re still 6’8, you’re still kinda slow. You still move at your own pace. But I would put Luka down as MVP this year.”

Dončić has lost 30 pounds since last summer, a league source told DallasHoopsJournal. The five-time All-Star was listed at 230 pounds with the Dallas Mavericks and Lakers last season. He’s at 200 pounds right now.

One of the top players in the NBA, Dončić appeared in 28 games with the Lakers last season after the Mavericks shockingly traded him in February. The talented point-forward averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.4 blocks with the purple and gold.

Dončić enters next season third in NBA history in points per game. He has career averages of 28.2 points with the Mavericks and Lakers.

The Lakers signed Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia this offseason. Head coach JJ Redick is expected to start Dončić, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, LeBron James and Ayton.

LAL lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 playoffs in five games despite having Dončić, James and home-court advantage.
