National Theatre of Ghana relaunches music education department

The National Theatre of Ghana has officially relaunched its Music Education Department with an Open Day Programme held on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the Theatre’s premises in Accra. The event brought together students, educators, arts professionals, and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate the power of creativity, learning, and the performing arts in national development. The relaunch marks a renewed commitment by the National Theatre to advance arts education, nurture young talent, and promote cultural appreciation through music and performance. Participating schools showcased their talents in dance, drama, debate, and music, highlighting the importance of creative expression in education. In his opening address, Mr. Ato Quayson, Director of the National Symphony Orchestra, welcomed guests and emphasized the purpose of the gathering; to reconnect with one of the Theatre’s core pillars i.e., arts education. He noted that the Music Education Department will serve as a platform for young people to explore their creativity and for schools to integrate the performing arts into their learning environments. Delivering the keynote speech, the Ag. Executive Director of the National Theatre, Mr. Henry Herbert Malm, described the relaunch as both a milestone and a movement. He stated that the revival of the department aligns with the Government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy, which seeks to expand economic opportunities and create new income streams for creative professionals such as musicians, educators, composers, and facilitators. According to him, this initiative is a tangible manifestation of the government’s commitment to resetting the economy through innovation, inclusion, and productivity. The Music Education Department’s Open Day Programme forms part of the Theatre’s broader efforts to empower the next generation of artists and educators while strengthening Ghana’s creative economy. Through capacity-building, mentorship, and practical engagement, the Department will foster collaboration between schools, communities, and cultural institutions to sustain Ghana’s performing arts heritage. With the official declaration by Mr. Malm, the Music Education Department of the National Theatre of Ghana has been formally relaunched, opening a new chapter in the Theatre’s mission to inspire, educate, and transform through the arts. The event was sponsored by Twellium Industrial Company, Producers of Verna mineral water and vigo drinks.
