A Nashville man, whom police say was driving the wrong way on Interstate 69, died in a pre-dawn crash Saturday Oct. 25. A Bloomington firefighter on his way to work in Speedway was also seriously injured in the accident. Johnathon S. Clark, 33, of Nashville, died as a result of his injuries sustained in the two-vehicle crash on I-69 near the East Sample Road exit. Preliminary police reports indicate Clark was driving south in a northbound lane of the highway when his 2016 Jeep Wrangler collided head-on with a 2011 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Solomon Dillard-Rynard of Bloomington. Dillard-Rynard, 29, sustained serious injuries, including a badly hurt leg. He was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital after the 6 a.m. crash, then transferred by medical helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital. An online fundraiser to help with his medical expenses has been established: https://www.theyardfoundation.org/mayday/urgent-support-needed-for-firefighter-solomon-rynard. According to a preliminary Indiana State Police report, both vehicles eventually settled in the highway median between the north and south bound lanes. The overturned Jeep caught fire. Troopers and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies used fire extinguishers to attempt to control the blaze. Firefighters from the Monroe Fire Protection District, where Dillard-Rynard was employed several years ago before moving to the Speedway Fire Department, also responded to the crash scene to render aid. The northbound lanes of I-69 near the 126.5 mile marker were closed until about 11 a.m. Traffic for Indiana University’s Saturday home football game had to be diverted around the site because of the accident. ISP says the crash is still being investigated. Contact H-T reporter Laura Lane at llane@heraldt.com or 812-318-5967.
