In response to plunging temperatures, Nashville's Metro Emergency Overflow Shelter has opened its doors for those in need during the frigid night of November 9th and will continue to do so through the night of November 10th, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. each evening. According to a release by the Nashville Government, extending shelter hours may be considered if snow remains on the ground with temperatures slightly above freezing, or if sub-freezing temperatures persist for 24 hours or more. The National Weather Service issues the forecast that triggers this activation, and shelter announcements are made by noon the day before. This gives residents time to get ready and find shelter. The shelter offers more than just a warm place to stay — guests receive hot meals, snacks, and possibly access to showers. Sleeping arrangements include mats and cots, and pets are welcome. Dogs are allowed, and kennels are provided for them, as reported by the Nashville Government. Open to singles, couples, young adults, and even pet owners, the emergency facility, located at 3230 Brick Church Pike, notably does not accommodate children, directing families in need to contact the Nashville Rescue Mission or other services for long-term support. Reflecting the collaborative effort of health organizations, including Neighborhood Health, Nashville General Hospital, and the Metro Public Health Department, on-site behavioral and medical support is readily available for shelter residents, as stated by the Nashville Government. Getting to the emergency overflow shelter is easy with free transportation options. After 7 p.m., Bus Line #23B from WeGo Central offers free rides, and a shuttle service with extra pick-up spots is also available. For people with pets, the Nashville Rescue Mission provides overnight shelter with kennels and extra support during bad weather. The Launch Pad Emergency Shelter is another option for young adults. It is LGBTQ+ affirming and open every night during the colder months, as noted by the Nashville Government. For those individuals facing unique challenges, such as domestic violence or complex backgrounds, specific contact lines have been established, including the Marry Parrish DV CE Line at 615-955-0620, and Room In the Inn provides extended support and resources, as per the Nashville Government.
