Narayana Health performs India’s first robotic pediatric heart surgery

Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, has achieved a historic medical milestone by performing the country’s first robotic-assisted closure of a ventricular septal defect (VSD) in children. Building on this pioneering accomplishment, the centre has also successfully conducted a range of robotic congenital heart surgeries, including atrial septal defect (ASD) closures, partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) rerouting, repair of double-chambered right ventricle (DCRV) and mitral valve surgeries. These landmark procedures mark a significant leap in pediatric cardiac care and reinforce Narayana Health City’s position as a national leader in robotic pediatric cardiac surgery. Led by Dr Raghu M G, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgery, the procedures were carried out through small thoracic ports without the need for sternotomy. The use of robotic surgical technology enabled delicate repairs with exceptional precision, minimal scarring, and faster recovery. All patients recovered smoothly without the need for blood transfusions, and their post-operative course was marked by rapid rehabilitation. Robotic-assisted congenital heart surgery offers multiple benefits over conventional open-heart techniques. The robotic system provides surgeons with three-dimensional high-definition visualisation and enhanced dexterity, enabling precise manoeuvres inside the small chambers of a child’s heart. For patients, the impact is equally significant, with less pain, faster recovery, reduced infection risk, and superior cosmetic outcomes, all of which are crucial in children and adolescents. Commenting on the achievement, Dr Raghu M G said, “By combining robotic precision with minimally invasive techniques, we are able to treat congenital heart defects with great safety and effectiveness. Our young patients recover faster, with less discomfort and minimal scars, allowing them to return quickly to their normal routines.” Also Read: Narayana Health marks 1 lakh neuro procedures in 20 years This milestone places Narayana Health City among the very few institutions globally capable of offering robotic-assisted congenital heart surgery. It represents a paradigm shift in the management of heart defects in children and underscores Narayana Health’s commitment to innovation, clinical excellence, and patient-centric care.
