The former government spokesperson on Security and Governance, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a visionary and trailblazer who redefined women’s participation in Ghanaian politics. Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Monday, October 27, 2025, Dr. Boakye-Danquah reflected on the immense impact of the late First Lady, noting that her legacy continues to shape the nation’s political landscape. “We are mourning on a sad note, but also on a very triumphant journey of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. For me, as I consider her in this Fourth Republic, I would consider her a trailblazer in Ghanaian politics,” he said. He noted that Nana Konadu’s influence went beyond her role as First Lady, as she championed the cause of women and inspired greater female participation in leadership. “She has etched her time within the fabric of Ghana and will continually be remembered by the good people of this country as we reflect upon her life and journey. I am certain that Ghana has gotten to a place where a number of its aspirations have been achieved. We have in this country the first female vice president,” he stated. Dr. Boakye-Danquah further highlighted her leadership in founding the 31st December Women’s Movement, describing it as a bold initiative that empowered women and demonstrated that they had an essential role in national development. “Clearly, you are aware of how Nana distinguished herself as an individual beyond being the First Lady of Ghana, the longest-serving, starting up the 31 December Movement, which was clearly to affirm the fact that women have a role and a place in our Ghanaian politics,” he added. He also praised her courage and devotion to social causes, noting that her passing leaves a void in Ghana’s fight for gender equity. “We will miss her dearly, we will miss her fortitude, her resilience, her standing up for women’s rights, and speaking up very clearly. She has been a great example of a couple because she stood very strongly with her husband throughout the PNDC. She has been a formidable woman,” he said. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, through which she championed gender equality, education, and women’s empowerment across Ghana. She passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra at the age of 76.
