NAMIBIA’S para-athletes delivered strong performances at the World Para-Athletics Championships in India, showcasing the country’s growing presence on the global stage.
Petrus Karuli (T37) secured a place in the Men’s 400m T37 finals after finishing third in Round 1 – Heat 2 with a time of 55.30 seconds. His qualification for the final marks another milestone for Namibia in para-athletics.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Lahja Iipinge (T12), the youngest athlete on the track, impressed in the Women’s 400m Round 1 – Heat 1. Competing with her guide Paulus Filipus, Iipinge set a new personal best of 59.78 seconds, finishing second in her heat behind Venezuela’s Alejandra Paola Perez Lopez (58.93 seconds). Although she narrowly missed advancing to the semi-finals, her performance has been celebrated as a significant achievement. Iipinge will next compete in the 100m and 200m events later in the championships.
Both athletes’ performances underline Namibia’s growing talent and ambition in para-sports, with expectations high for the upcoming finals and sprint events.
