Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu has announced an incentive of ₹800 per bag of urea to farmers who reduce urea consumption. The Government’s decision comes after a severe shortage of urea this kharif. A 50-kg urea bag costs about ₹260.
Addressing the Collectors’ Conference at Amaravati on Monday, he directed officials to distribute the subsidy under the PM Pranam scheme directly to farmers, in order to encourage them to cut down the use of urea.
Stating that there is no dearth of urea supply, he said that officials should have planned well to ensure timely supply of urea.
The Chief Minister said China recently rejected a chilli consignment citing chemical residues. ”Excess use of chemicals, pesticides and urea lead to cancer. Citing the example of Punjab where two trains are being operated between Punjab and Delhi for cancer patients, he said Andhra Pradesh stood fifth in terms of cancer cases.
“We need to educate farmers on the health hazards of the abuse of urea,” he said.
Subsidy to aqua farmers
The Chief Minister said the Government would protect the interest of aquaculture farmers, who were facing a serious challenge after the imposition of tariffs by the US.
“We will provide power at ₹1.50 a unit to aquaculture farmers,” he said, asking officials to register all the aquaculture farmers,” he said in a statement on Monday.
