NAACP Goose Creek branch hosts annual Freedom Fund Luncheon

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCSC) - The Goose Creek Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People hosted its annual Freedom Fund Luncheon Saturday afternoon. The fundraiser supports community programs, scholarships and outreach initiatives and this year’s theme was “Let Freedom Ring.” The event recognized individuals in the community who support the organization’s mission of fighting for equity in healthcare, education and civic engagement. “We want different communities, different organizations, to meet, to mingle,” Sharina Haynes, NAACP Goose Creek Branch President, said. “We want to create something kind of festive, particularly in these times with the government shutdown, so many things happening politically. It’s important for us to lean on each other, engage and collaborate with each other.” Among those honored was journalist Shelbey Roberts, who received the torchbearer for truth award for being a storyteller with integrity, grace and purpose. “We wanted to highlight the idea that we all have a voice and that we all play a part in a collective community. Our honorees are really just supporters of the NAACP and supporters of the community,” Haynes said.
