STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Over a dozen New York colleges and universities received funding via the Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program, known as HECap, to upgrade campuses and their equipment. “New York’s independent colleges and universities are engines of innovation that prepare our students for success and strengthen communities in every region of the state,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a written statement. “By investing in modern classrooms, laboratories and facilities, we’re ensuring that students have access to the tools and environments they need to thrive. These projects stand for our ongoing commitment to keeping New York at the forefront of education and economic opportunity.” The funding — $49 million worth — will benefit 35 higher education institutions. Additionally, “Campuses that receive HECap grants are required to invest at least $3 of their own funds for every $1 in state funds received,” the statement explained. In total, over $195 million worth of investments spread across the 35 colleges and universities. The statement itemized a short list of some of the funding designations, which includes St. John’s University: A former Staten Island institution. The Staten Island campus shuttered in 2024.
