Mysuru Congress pays tribute to Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary

The district and city unit of the Congress paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary on Friday. Addressing the gathering, Minister for Minor Irrigation and Science and Technology S. Boseraju described Indira Gandhi as a symbol of strength, who laid the foundation for women’s active participation in Indian politics. Mr. Boseraju said that at a time when issues regarding women’s freedom posed serious challenges, India Gandhi not only led the Congress, but became the Prime Minister of the country. Her leadership and tenure as the Prime Minister is a milestone in the political history of the country, the Minister stated. Her assassination on this day in 1984 remains one of the darkest days of the nation, Mr. Boseraju added. Oher speakers described Indira Gandhi as an intelligent and courageous woman who faced a myriad of challenges and surmounted them. Indira Gandhi’s welfare schemes such as the Twenty-Point Programme were recalled and described as policy initiatives that ushered in a ray of hope among the poor and the downtrodden of the country. The programme was attended by R. Murthy, president, Mysuru City Congress Committee; B.J. Vijay Kumar, president, District Congress Committee, and other party functionaries.
