Mumbai: In a move to boost business activity and offer more convenience to citizens, the Maharashtra government has officially allowed shops and establishments across the state to function round the clock. However, outlets selling liquor remain outside the purview of this decision. What All It Includes According to the circular issued by the Industries, Energy, Labour and Mining Department, most shops, service outlets, and commercial establishments can now remain open 24 hours a day. Theatres and cinemas, which were earlier subject to regulated operating hours, have also been freed from restrictions and may now operate without time limits. Exceptions to the Rule The only businesses excluded from this relaxation are liquor outlets. Permit rooms, beer bars, wine shops, and other establishments selling alcohol must still adhere to regulated timings. To ensure fair treatment of workers, the state government has clarified that every employee working in establishments that operate round the clock must receive a mandatory weekly rest of 24 consecutive hours. This requirement falls under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017. The government’s circular comes after several complaints from traders that local authorities and police were preventing 24/7 operations. To address this, the state has notified all local administrations and police departments to ensure the new order is enforced effectively. Officials believe the decision will give businesses more flexibility, stimulate economic activity, and provide greater convenience to residents, particularly in urban centres where demand for late-night services is increasing.
