‘Sexualised’: Aussie fitness star unleashes at ‘booty’ habit
Kayla Itsines has revealed she can’t stand the direction the fitness industry is heading in, calling out influencers who film from an angle…
Australia’s most prominent fitness influencer has opened up about how she built her now multimillion-dollar empire, revealing the surprising true extent of her business portfolio.
Personal trainer, author and entrepreneur, Kayla Itsines, was recently stopped on the street in the Gold Coast, Queensland, by jobs app, Getahead.
Getahead works like Tinder to match jobseekers to employers, with the company running a TikTok series where they ask Aussies what they do for work and how much money they make.
Ms Itsines, 34, shot to fame over a decade ago after launching her Bikini Body Guide ebook. She is now best known for Sweat, which is a workout and meal planning app with more than one million active monthly users.

However, this is far from her only business venture, with the fitness influencer having also launched a dog training app called DogIt in 2024.
She also has an extensive real estate portfolio, as well as plans for her next business.
“I have commercial real estate, things like petrol stations, medical centres, residential stuff. And I am also getting into supplements as well. So, a lot of things,” she said.
When it came to the salary question, Ms Itsines said she wasn’t “too comfortable” revealing her income.
However, last year she did feature on the Australian Financial Review’s Young Rich list, coming in at spot 34 with an breathtaking estimated net worth of $171 million.

Before her career took off, Ms Itsines used to run personal training sessions in her parents’ backyard, revealing the very reasonable price she used to charge.
“I charged a dollar a minute and I only did 30 minute sessions. So $30 for 30 minutes.
That was 15 years ago,” she said.
When asked if she ever thought her career would be at the point it is now, Ms Itsines said “absolutely not”, adding she was “so happy” training clients in her parents’ backyard.
However, she revealed her family wasn’t initially very thrilled with her choice of career.
“I grew up in a Greek family and I think the best thing you could be in a Greek family was a doctor and coming to my family as a personal trainer, that didn’t fly well,” she said.
“It didn’t fly well with my parents. They did support me, obviously, I trained in their backyard.
“But my grandparents, who I care so much about their opinion, hated it. They are obviously really proud now, but at the time it took them about 10 years to come around.”

She then built her brand off the back of this, bootstrapping the whole business, which eventually transitioned into the wildly successful Sweat app.
“I had my best friend with me and a few other people. They were not even qualified to be honest, some were barristers, spray tanners. It was honestly just hiring people for their personalities,” Ms Itsines said.
“If I was to do it again, I would definitely get some experts in but experts cost money and, at the time, we didn’t have the money. So, we just ran with great personalities, and look at us now.”
