MSP finds out more about outdoor play initiative at Wishaw nature reserve

MSP Clare Adamson has praised the life-changing impact of outdoor play following a visit to a special event at Greenhead Moss Nature Reserve in Wishaw, hosted by Inspiring Scotland and local charity Outlet Play. The event highlighted the ongoing success of the Outdoor Community Play (OCP) Fund, delivered by Inspiring Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Government. This fund supports free, inclusive outdoor play sessions for children and families across Scotland, particularly in communities where access to nature and play opportunities may be limited. Speaking after the visit, Ms Adamson, the MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, said: “It was a real pleasure to be at Greenhead Moss and see the smiles on the children’s faces as they ran through the forest, made mud pies, and played together in nature. “This is exactly what childhood should be – active, joyful, and full of imagination. I’m proud to support this kind of grassroots work that has such a profound impact on children’s health, wellbeing, and confidence. The work of Outlet Play and Inspiring Scotland is nothing short of inspiring.” In the 2024/25 period alone, the Outdoor Community Play Fund has supported over 16,000 children and 8,000 families, delivering nearly 5,000 outdoor play sessions across 14 local authorities, including both North and South Lanarkshire. The fund has invested £550,000 in outdoor play initiatives, while leveraging more than £420,000 in additional match funding. During the visit, Ms Adamson joined families and staff as they explored woodland trails, built dens, played in leaf piles, and enjoyed the freedom and creativity that comes from being in the natural environment, all supported by trained outdoor play practitioners. “The Outdoor Community Play Fund is a brilliant example of how government and local partners can work together to give children the best possible start in life. As we continue to focus on early years development and reducing inequality, this kind of initiative is essential,” the MSP added. Outlet Play, a local charity based in North Lanarkshire, runs regular outdoor play sessions designed to give children safe, supported, and engaging opportunities to play freely in nature, regardless of their background. *Don’t miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
