More than two months after the September 1st general elections, the 13th Parliament began yesterday with the swearing in of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and MPs but the failure to hold an election of the Leader of the Opposition has raised questions. The presumptive Leader of the Opposition (LOO) would be US-indicted, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Head, Azruddin Mohamed who also faces a series of charges here including tax evasion. Mohamed who has attracted wide public attention with his flashy lifestyle has accused the governing PPP/C of doing everything in its power to stand in his way in Parliament. The election of the Opposition Leader would have had to be done by the re-elected Speaker Manzoor Nadir but he terminated the session at the swearing in of the MPs without explanation and was unavailable after the session for questions. The first sitting was convened at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre. Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs told journalists that the Constitution sets no timeline for the election of the Leader of the Opposition (LOO), placing the decision squarely in the hands of the Speaker.
