Following in the footsteps of its fellow nineties slasher Scream , I Know What You Did Last Summer gets the “requel” treatment. A new group of friends find themselves terrorised by a hook-wielding stalker who knows about a gruesome incident from their past. Little known helmer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, in her third feature directorial outing, and her co-writers pay tribute to the previous two flicks – too much in some instances – but despite a more modern, glossier look and vibe, her flawed flick feels old (slicker) hat. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were watching a reboot in the first 20 minutes – and, come on, how likely is it that an incident like that would happen on the same stretch of road with a near-identical fallout? Then legacy characters Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) pop up to make it clear it’s a sequel – although both are so mean-spirited they don’t feel like the same people we last saw in 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer . The newbies cast rarely rise above stereotypes and with the exception of Chase Sui Wonders’ Ava , aren’t very likeable. Much like its sibling Scream , it’s the whodunnit element that carries the most intrigue but while late revelations surprise, the motivations involved don’t feel earned. Two other legacy characters get shoe-horned in – one really lazily and the other setting up a sequel I’m not sure I want to see. Which is unfortunate as this “requel” isn’t a total bust. The mystery does build well; there are a couple of splendidly executed, gnarly kills; I liked the town’s efforts to move on from its past and the pushback it receives; and there is a welcome nostalgia seeing Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr., who have both weathered well, on screen again. Sadly, the lazy script is a letdown and even when it takes chances, there isn’t enough meat on the storyline bones. In keeping with the series overall, I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025 falls way short of the Scream “requel” and doesn’t hook you in with its lure of more to come. ● Which is your favourite I Know What You Did Last Summer flick?
