Mother tongue instruction policy confined to KG-Primary 3 – MoH clarifies clarifies

Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Clement Apaak has, under the instruction of Minister Haruna Iddrisu, clarified that the use of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction would be confined only from kindergarten to Primary Three. The Builsa South Member of Parliament stated that the clarification was needed to address the public debate surrounding the matter after the Minister made the announcement. Haruna Iddrisu had directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to strictly enforce the use of mother tongue instruction in all Ghanaian schools. The directive, the Minister explained, was part of the efforts to reform the education sector while promoting the use of local languages in teaching and learning. Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons Living with Disabilities, Mr. Iddrisu noted that the move was to encourage the use of local languages as a medium of instruction, particularly at the basic education level, to enhance comprehension and learning outcomes. After the directive was issued, a section of the Ghanaian public demanded clarity concerning the use of the mother tongue. Providing the clarity on Monday, October 27, 2025, Dr. Apaak said, “The Honourable Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has asked me to clarify that the policy directive he announced on Friday regarding the compulsory use of mother tongue as the medium of instruction aimed at public basic schools is confined to KG up to Primary Three.” By: Rainbowradioonline.com/Ghana
