There is widespread devastation in Black River, St Elizabeth, in Jamaica following the passage of Hurricane Melissa. From homes to schools to hospitals, an entire community in ruins. Many people have been left traumatised after experiencing the hurricane. Vanice Johnson told CBC’s Krystal Hoyte that she and her 8-year-old son barely made it out alive. This as she stayed in a cupboard until a neighbour came to her rescue. Ms Johnson says she has no idea where to begin to rebuild. Meanwhile, Samaritan’s Purse, an international disaster relief agency, is in Jamaica trying to set up, but the gap for aid remains wide and urgent. While there are walk-ins as people seek treatment, there will be a long road to recovery. Our Krystal Hoyte noted that mental health services were provided on Monday, with psychologists in the communities checking in on residents. About The Author
