Most thankless household chores include cleaning toilets and taking out the bins

The most thankless household duties include scrubbing the loo, emptying the bins and doing the laundry so the family doesn’t run short of socks and underwear. A survey of 2,000 adults identified the jobs which go unrecognised, with 31 per cent confessing they seldom or never witness them mysteriously getting completed by someone else. And 77 per cent revealed there is one person in their household who shoulders the bulk of these tasks. Other overlooked jobs included removing hair from the shower drain, storing away the clean washing, hoovering and wiping down the cooktop. Beyond the top 10, clearing out expired food and cleaning the fridge shelves (19 per cent), defrosting the freezer (15 per cent), and unloading the dishwasher (14 per cent) also appeared as duties which go unrecognised. The study was conducted by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances, AMDEA, which operates a ‘Know Watt’s What’ website [www.amdea.org.uk/know-watts-what] to help people learn how minor behavioural adjustments can make a significant impact on household expenses. Stefan Hay, CEO for the organisation said: “If you are that person who always runs the washing machine or the dishwasher, especially on energy saving Eco-mode, we salute you. “Even if some people in your household believe these tasks are done by ‘magic,’ rather than recognising it’s you, have faith as these small things are essential to the smooth and efficient running of a home. “With constantly innovating smart tech in appliances, lots of these jobs will be made quicker, quieter and easier for you.” Among all participants, 85 per cent consider such duties vital to household efficiency, climbing to 94 per cent when questioning those primarily responsible for completing them. One in five participants who tackle these chores reported handling at least six unacknowledged tasks daily around their property that pass unnoticed. Of those burdened with such responsibilities, 21 per cent feel unappreciated yet remain driven, whilst 48 per cent derive satisfaction from completing them. Disliking disorder, preventing future chaos, and taking pride in a tidy home emerged as the primary drivers behind their efforts. With one in 10 (11 per cent) taking satisfaction in donning their cape and earning recognition as the household champion. Regarding acknowledgement of these contributions, though, half of those undertaking these duties report this is seldom demonstrated, contrasted with 45 per cent of those taking a passive role believing recognition is frequently offered. Between different age groups, particular chores rank differently according to how overlooked they are, with Boomers placing oven-cleaning (26 per cent) and clearing crumbs from their toaster (24 per cent) higher. Meanwhile, 23 per cent of millennials believe their efforts go unrecognised when they dispose of expired food and scrub fridge shelves, the OnePoll.com research revealed. When tackling these domestic duties, 68 per cent remain mindful of energy efficiency, boiling only the necessary amount of water or running full washing loads instead of partial ones. Among these respondents, 62 per cent actively pursue such practices to cut their energy costs. In total, 73 per cent believe they could enhance their energy efficiency further, though barriers include the expense of appliance upgrades, choosing convenience over efficiency, and insufficient motivation. Stefan Hay from AMDEA commented: “Lots of little jobs can build up to making a real difference in the home and go a long way to helping everyone’s well-being and ensuring our belongings last. “It’s worth thinking about small changes you can make to your routine, to help your pocket and the environment. “By using your appliances correctly and adopting clever savings hacks, you could be rewarded with a sparkling home and cheaper energy bills.” TOP 10 MOST THANKLESS HOUSEHOLD TASKS, ACCORDING TO BRITS 1.
