Mortal Kombat 2 - the upcoming action movie based on the famous gory video game series - will now be releasing a week earlier than planned. You'll be able to sit down (back) and check it out on the 8th May. Its original theatrical release was set to be on the 15th. This window was largely uncontested, save for Comedy Poetic License and play adaptation Is God Is. However, by moving up a week, the film moves out of range of The Mandalorian and Grogu, which may very well eat up the nerdy movie crowd on the 22nd May onwards. Now, in the fight for box office success, all Mortal Kombat 2 has to kontend with is leftovers from the 1st May weekend. That includes The Devil Wears Prada 2 and an animated children's movie called Animal Friends, starring Ryan Reynolds. Not exactly similar audiences, one would assume. Back in August, the Mortal Kombat 2 movie was pushed back to a 2026 release, forcing fans to edit their kalenders from a jubilant movie moment on the 24th October. The film is being written by Jeremy Slater, the writer behind the critically acclaimed Moon Knight series. The film stars Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, coming off a very successful role in The Boys as Billy Butcher. He was also Judge Dredd in the brilliant Dredd movie which more of you should have watched back in the day, I was too young at the time and wasn't allowed. Former Eurogamer editor-in-chief Wesley Yin Poole found the Mortal Kombat movie (2021) boring. He wrote: "There's just enough low-rent entertainment to prevent the Mortal Kombat movie from being a complete disaster, but it's tough to recommend when it costs £16 to rent online. A tenner straight to Blu-ray feels like a better fit."
