Federal court orders continuation of SNAP benefits, easing uncertainty for Metro Detroit families Federal judges ruled that the Trump administration must continue funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, for the month of November. The decision on Friday (Oct. 31) brought relief to some state leaders in Michigan but left many families across Metro Detroit facing uncertainty. Barbara Jordan, a Detroit resident, expressed concern while stocking up on groceries at the Capuchin Services Center. “I’m trying to find resources to get food. University of Michigan researchers use vehicle GPS data to cut traffic delays in Oakland County A new technology developed by University of Michigan engineers is transforming how traffic signals are optimized, replacing traditional manual traffic counting methods with a system that utilizes GPS data from vehicles. The new system, being implemented across Oakland County, requires data from only 5% of vehicles on the road to adjust traffic signals in real time. “The new approach we are developing is only reliant upon 5% of vehicle data, meaning almost all of the vehicles in the U.S are connected through a certain extent,” said Henry Liu, director of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. Read more here. Deadly shooting near Detroit barber shop leaves one dead, another in serious condition Police are investigating a deadly shooting near a barber shop on Detroit’s west side. The shooting occurred on Friday (Oct. 31) in the 20500 block of Schaefer Highway, between West 8 Mile Road and Norfolk Street, around 5:29 p.m. Police said two people were shot, leaving one man dead and another in serious condition.
