DUBLIN — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Skylar Thompson was reportedly robbed on Friday night in Dublin after the team arrived in the city, but Irish police have yet to receive a formal complaint from Thompson, the NFL, or the Steelers. As a result, they have not affirmed the details of the incident or that even a robbery took place.
Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten said in a statement to NFL Network that the team was ‘aware of the incident’ that occurred between Thompson and someone in Dublin, but would have no further comment.
“We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin. We will have no further comment at this time as we are working with NFL security to gather more information regarding the incident,” Lauten said.
The Irish Times revealed details about the alleged incident. Thompson was in the area near Temple Bar in central Dublin. It happened at 2:30 a.m., according to the report, which states that Thompson was jumped by a “group of males.”
During the reported attack, Thompson’s phone was stolen. The incident is now being investigated by the NFL.
The police say that they did encounter a male in his 20s who required some medical assistance in the Temple Bar area, but that he did not need to travel to the hospital for his injuries.
“We are aware of the incident involving Skylar Thompson in Ireland and are relieved to know he is okay,” the NFLPA said in a press release. “The NFLPA is actively gathering more information and working to understand the full circumstances surrounding what took place. As always, our priority is the health and safety of our player members – especially as we continue to work on player protections and well-being while playing international games – and we will continue to support Skylar in any way 55 he needs.”
Steelers players were banned from going out in Dublin on Saturday night. The team won 24-21 over the Minnesota Vikings.
