Aston Villa’s former president of football operations Monchi has explained his decision to return to Spain. Monchi left his role at Villa last month and was subsequently replaced by Roberto Olabe. It ended a two-year spell in the West Midlands where he worked alongside Unai Emery with Villa confirming he would still have an advisory role. Monchi said he had consulted his family before making the switch back to his homeland. “When you identify with a project, no matter how humble, there’s always something that hits you in the gut and motivates you. There’s no pressure, but there is responsibility,” he told Onda Cero’s Radioeste Noche programme. “I chose what I wanted to do after talking with my family and friends, and those who know me know that I’m happy here, in my homeland. “I’m as much a Sevilla fan as anyone. Right now, anything I consider is more medium-term than short-term because right now, my mind is focused on this. “Everything that happens in the future has to be compatible with being at San Fernando.” Monchi endured a difficult summer at Villa where he was tasked with strengthening the squad while dealing with FFP and PSR rules. But the lack of Champions League football was a significant hurdle, and there was also the emotional pull of a return to San Fernando, where he helped spearhead a bid to rescue his hometown club. In a statement released when his departure was confirmed , Nassef Sawiris, chairman of Villa, said: “Firstly, I would like to thank Monchi for his hard work and invaluable contribution as President of Football Operations during an exciting period at Aston Villa. “His commitment and vision has directly contributed to the club’s recent successes, reaching the quarter-final of the Champions League as well as qualifying for Europe for three consecutive seasons. “We are delighted that Roberto is joining Aston Villa. “He has built a reputation as someone who can spot talent that can be developed and we look forward to supporting him to achieve the ambitions we have for V Sports and Aston Villa.”
