Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday unveiled a series of major infrastructure projects in Arunachal Pradesh worth Rs 5,125.37 crore, signalling a significant push towards regional development and energy security. The announcement was made from a function at Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar, where Modi virtually laid the foundation stones for multiple initiatives spanning energy, tourism, health, connectivity, and housing.Among the key projects are two large-scale hydropower projects in the Shi Yomi district. The Tato-I hydropower project, with a capacity of 186 MW and an estimated cost of Rs 1,750 crore, will be developed jointly by the Arunachal Pradesh government and the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO). It is projected to generate approximately 802 million units of electricity annually. The Heo project, a 240-MW initiative costing Rs 1,939 crore, is also a collaboration between the state government and NEEPCO and is expected to produce around 1,000 million units per year. Both projects are located on the Yarjep river and are part of a broader plan to expand the state’s hydroelectric capacity. Live EventsOfficials highlighted that these initiatives will play a crucial role in enhancing energy security and providing affordable power to the region.Modi also laid the foundation stone for a convention centre in Tawang, to be built under the PM-DevINE scheme at a cost of Rs 145.37 crore. Designed to accommodate over 1,500 people, the centre will meet international standards and is intended to promote tourism and showcase the cultural heritage of the region.In addition, the Prime Minister inaugurated several other projects worth over Rs 1,290 crore across various sectors. These include a State Cancer Institute in Itanagar at Rs 217.19 crore, a new road in Upper Siang district connecting the remote village of Peki Modi for the first time at Rs 69.35 crore, and a road from Amuli to Athunli via Leyaka Pass in Dibang Valley at Rs 96.26 crore.Other significant initiatives include the construction of working women’s hostels in 26 districts at Rs 187.98 crore, nine new fire stations costing Rs 40.50 crore, and the upgradation of the 2nd Armed Police Battalion at Aalo for Rs 39.89 crore. Modi also approved the development of 530 new ministerial bungalows and staff quarters across 23 districts at Rs 420 crore, residential buildings in the newly created districts of Bichom, Keyi Panyor, and Lepa Rada at Rs 25 crore, as well as mini secretariats in these three districts, also costing Rs 25 crore.Addressing the gathering, Modi described these initiatives as an example of the “double benefits” of the “double-engine” government. He stated, “Arunachal is moving forward. The new power projects announced today will make the state a major power producer, create thousands of jobs, and provide affordable electricity. Be it ease of education, ease of business, ease of travel, or ease of treatment, our double-engine government is working to make life easier for every citizen.”The programme was attended by Governor KT Parnaik, Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, among others.
