Most obituaries published in the Reading Eagle are submitted through funeral homes and cremation services, but we will accept submissions from families. Obituaries can be emailed to obituaries@readingeagle.com.
In addition to the text of the obituary, any photographs that you wish to include can be attached to this email. Please put the text of the obituary in a Word document, a Google document or in the body of the email. The Reading Eagle also requires a way to verify the death, so please include either the phone number of the funeral home or cremation service that is in charge of the deceased’s care or a photo of his/her death certificate. We also request that your full name, phone number and address are all included in this email.
All payments by families must be made with a credit card. We will send a proof of the completed obituary before we require payment. The obituary cannot run, however, until we receive payment in full.
Obituaries can be submitted for any future date, but they must be received no later than 3:00 p.m. the day prior to its running for it to be published.

The Exeter Community Library is holding a Mocktails & Music fundraiser on Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the library, 4569 Prestwick Drive, Exeter Township. The event features themed nonalcoholic cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and performances by local musicians. Proceeds support the library’s resources, programs and services to the community.

Go Taste Berks
The Greater Reading Chamber Alliance’s Go Taste Berks passports are available now. The program officially kicks off Nov. 1 and runs through Nov. 30. The $25 passport unlocks deals and freebies at nearly 30 businesses including bars, restaurants, breweries, wineries, cafes, retail markets, farms and creameries.
Participants scan a QR code at each Go Taste Berks location to validate their visit, earn points and claim their perks. They can rack up additional points by participating in activities along the way. Top point-getters will be eligible for prizes, as will the most frequented vendors.

Tolkien and more
A new Wyomissing Public Library book club focuses on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. The group meets Monday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m. in the library’s multipurpose room. Playwright andTolkien fan Adam Richter will facilitate the discussion, which is free and open to the public, whether one has read Tolkien or not. The first meeting will focus on the first three chapters of “The Hobbit.”
Also on Monday at 6, the library will offer the first of two “Art for Adults” evening classes. Artist Sara Miller will introduce wet felting and needle felting techniques, and by the end of the second class on Sept. 29, students will have completed two small projects. No experience is necessary. The $20 fee includes supplies.
On Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m., Dr. Michelle Mart of Penn State Berks will discuss her latest book, “Six Women Who Shaped What Americans Eat: Food Choice in and Age of Abundance.” The book explores how culture, politics and personal vision collided in the kitchen and left a lasting imprint on what Americans eat today. Copies will be available for sale and for signing.

Fall festival
A community fall festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4201 Stoudt’s Ferry Bridge Road, Muhlenberg Township.
The event includes dozens of local crafters and popular vendors, food for purchase, kids activities and music by Pretzel City Chorus – Berks Harmony Quartet from noon to 1 p.m. Those who bring an item for the Muhlenberg Churches Food Pantry will be entered into a raffle for a $50 Redner’s gift card.
Craft and vendors fair
Reading Junior Academy is holding a craft and vendors fair Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 309 N. Kenhorst Blvd., Reading. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Apple Festival
The Hay Creek Apple Festival is scheduled for Oct. 11 and 12 at Historic Joanna Furnace in Robeson Township.
Each day begins with the Hay Creek apple pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Throughout the day a wide variety of apple-based foods will be available. The 19th century Joanna Furnace apple cider press will be operating throughout each day. A variety of other food will be available as well along with wine and craft beer.

The annual Hay Creek Flea Market will be open both days. Family activities at the festival include scarecrow building, pumpkin painting, hay rides and face painting. Art lecture
Daniel Boone Homestead Associates continues its fall lecture series with “Charles C. Hofmann’s Paintings Along the Schuylkill River: Landscapes of Peace, Prosperity, and Despair” on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Exeter Township historic site’s DeTurk Education Center. .
Historic Trappe curator Christopher Malone will reveal the troubled but vibrant world of Hofmann, a German immigrant, almshouse inmate and itinerant painter. His body of work documents many significant Pennsylvania sites and landscapes that no longer exist.
There is a $2/person suggested donation for those who attend. No pets and no smoking. The Fall Lecture Series will take place in the DeTurk Education Center. This program is presented and funded by The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.

A $5 bag of books sale will be held Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West Lawn-Wyomissing Hills Library, 101 Woodside Ave. West Lawn. The event is provided by the Friends of the WLWH Library. There will be adult and children’s books plus CDs and DVDs. Bags will be provided.

Pet loss support
A Christian pet loss support group will be held at St. John’s Reformed Church, 4001 Penn Ave., Sinking Spring. The next meeting will be held in the church’s fellowship hall on Monday, Oct. 6, at 6:45 p.m.
Sessions are led by Dr. Becky Frank, DVM, associate veterinarian with Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice. The program entails six different sessions, and participants may join at any time.
