MLB Players Reportedly Against Pursuit of Salary Cap, Label It 'Declaration of War'

The Los Angeles Dodgers continuing to spend millions upon millions of dollars every offseason has been bad for baseball.Yes, there is nothing in the rules that say they can’t do it, but it leaves small market teams like the Miami Marlins and Cincinnati Reds hung out to dry when it comes to signing premier free agents. That is why a salary cap across MLB has begun to be mentioned, but according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, that would cause an uproar among the players. In an article on Thursday, Passan dove into the ramifications of what a potential salary cap discussion would be between the players and executives. According to Passan, the players “plan to refuse any such entreaties, regarding a continued pursuit of a cap as a declaration of war.”We’ve already seen a fiery Bryce Harper go off on MLB commissioner Rob Manfred during the season. It now appears that several other players around the league share the same sentiment about a salary cap as Harper does. The current CBA between the owners and MLBPA is set to expire in December of next year. The major discussion when that expires will be surrounding the implementation of the salary cap that is so badly wanted by owners across the league. The ongoing discussion between now and the expiration of the CBA date will play a major role in the 2027 MLB season beginning on time. If the owners go full force toward wanting a salary cap, we may see the second MLB lockout in the span of just five seasons.More MLB: Phillies’ Rob Thomson Reveals Aaron Nola Bullpen Plan as Concerns Mount
