Missouri redirects $15.6M for food aid as SNAP benefits run out

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe announced Wednesday that the state will expedite food assistance for Missourians before federally-funded SNAP benefits run out in November. Because SNAP benefits are funded entirely by the federal government, now shutdown for nearly one month, the state cannot use its own appropriations to extend the program. But state officials can still help Missourians by redirecting other resources. Kehoe directed a $10.6 million transfer from the Senior Service Growth and Development Fund to Missouri Area Agencies on Aging, a move intended to provide meals for seniors in need of food assistance. Kehoe is also distributing $5 million to Missouri food banks with money from the state's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Fund. “While the State of Missouri cannot fully replace federal SNAP benefits for those who rely on them, we are working to expedite additional funding sources to assist Missouri's senior population and food banks," said Kehoe via a news release Wednesday. Missourians in need of food assistance or looking to volunteer or donate should visit Feeding Missouri, a coalition of six Missouri food banks, for more information.
