Daily Variety, the go-to news source for all things entertainment and business, announced today that a Miss Piggy movie is in development at Disney, which owns the rights to the Muppets. The delightful diva is getting the star treatment, and she’s got a team of Hollywood heavy hitters making it happen. In an article shared by Daily Variety on November 5, the entertainment journal reported that a Miss Piggy movie is in development, with superstars Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence signed on to produce. Cole Escola, the Tony winner behind the Broadway hit Oh, Mary!, is set to write the screenplay. During an appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast, hosted by SNL’s Bowen Yang and funnyman Matt Rogers, Lawrence spilled the tea on the upcoming project. She said: “I don’t know if I can announce this, but I am just going to … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie, and Cole is writing it.” Oops! We’re unable to load this content right now. View directly on Instagram When asked if Lawrence and longtime friend Stone would also act in the film, the Hunger Games star said candidly, “I think so.” Longstanding Friendship From text buddies to Oscar-winning mom friends, Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence’s enduring friendship is one of the longest-standing in Hollywood. First introduced through Cheers alum Woody Harrelson, Stone and Lawrence’s friendship began with texting for a year before meeting in person. The pair often offer one another public support and share a deep bond as two of the most sought-after talents in Hollywood, who have both navigated international stardom, Academy Award wins, marriage, and motherhood. Now Lawrence and Stone can add co-producers to their list of accolades. The pair will undoubtedly serve as mentors and teachers to Miss Piggy, who first delighted fans with her co-starring role in The Muppet Movie (1979) alongside Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and musicians Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Despite her many scene-stealing appearances in Muppet-related film and TV projects, the Lawrence–Stone–produced film marks Miss Piggy’s first starring role. Miss Piggy has yet to comment on her upcoming project but will undoubtedly say something to the effect of, “Moi deserves this. Xo!”
