Minuscule test score gains signal Oregon faces years of digging out from its post-pandemic academic hole

Oregon continues along its excruciatingly slow path of post-pandemic academic recovery, with student scores on math and English tests given last spring inching up ever-so-slightly from the previous few years.
Overall, the state’s students are still performing far below pre-COVID levels, according to results released Thursday by the Oregon Department of Education. More than five years after then-Gov. Kate Brown ordered schools to shut, it is soberingly clear that improving their results will be the work of the next decade, not mere months or even years, state education leaders say.
