By: Valentia Tetteh The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former First Lady, Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a fearless advocate for women’s rights and a trailblazer whose impact on Ghana’s political and social landscape remains indelible. In a statement signed by the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Caucus praised the late Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings for her lifelong commitment to the empowerment of Ghanaian women and her visionary leadership that reshaped the role of women in national development. The statement highlighted her founding of the 31st December Women’s Movement in 1982, which became one of Ghana’s most influential women’s organizations. Through the movement, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings championed women’s empowerment, community development, and participation in decision-making at all levels of governance. She was also credited for her instrumental role in securing the inclusion of the “Affirmative Action” clause in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, an enduring milestone in the country’s pursuit of gender equality and social justice. According to the Minority Caucus, her boldness and conviction later saw her make history as one of the first Ghanaian women to establish and lead a political party, the National Democratic Party (NDP), in 2012. The statement further acknowledged her transformative work as First Lady, noting that she turned the office from a ceremonial role into one dedicated to advancing education, health, and social justice. Her advocacy, the Minority noted, led to the creation of schools, day-care centres, and literacy programmes that benefited deprived communities across the country. “She inspired generations of women to become leaders, entrepreneurs, and advocates for progress,” the statement said. The Caucus extended its deepest condolences to Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, the Agyeman-Rawlings family, and all whose lives were touched by the former First Lady’s compassion and extraordinary service. “May her soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
